Position: Community & Communications Coordinator

Senior Support Wonder Leader

Part-time · 3 days/week · 24 hrs/week · $23/hr  |  Brooklyn, NY

About School of Wonder: We have been creating immersive, nature-based learning experiences in New York City since 2017. Based in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, we serve more than 600 families each year through afterschool programs, holiday camps, and summer camps — spending 40% of our program days outdoors. Our Wonder Kids embark on imaginative adventures guided by Gaia (Mother Earth), developing curiosity, creativity, and care for the planet. Behind the magic is a team of fantastic educators, artists, scientists, and community builders. We're growing — and we want you to grow with us.

The Role: You'll wear two distinct hats. As our Community & Communications Coordinator, you'll be School of Wonder's voice in the world — keeping families informed, growing our community, and making sure our story is told well. As a Senior Support Wonder Leader, you'll show up in Prospect Park to help guide children through outdoor adventures rooted in play, wonder, and connection to nature. This is a role for someone equally comfortable coordinating an email campaign and facilitating a scavenger hunt with a group of 8-year-olds.

What You'll Do:

Build our community — communications & outreach

  • Write and send newsletters, program announcements, and enrollment campaigns via Mailchimp

  • Plan and manage a communications calendar across email, social media, WhatsApp, and web

  • Manage and update our website (Squarespace): program pages, blog posts, branding consistency

  • Coordinate campaigns to grow word-of-mouth enrollment

  • Support local outreach: flyer distribution, community partnerships, neighborhood visibility in Park Slope

  • Coordinate content for social media — scheduling posts and maintaining brand voice

Delight our families — customer communications

  • Send timely, warm announcements via WhatsApp and email around programs

  • Maintain our CRM (Mailchimp): update records, manage segments and tags, ensure clean lists

  • Handle inbound family inquiries with responsiveness and care

  • Coordinate with the Program Director on enrollment messaging and communications needs

Show up in the park — Senior Support Wonder Leader

  • Facilitate afterschool sessions (at least 2 per week), and some holiday camps, and summer camp adventures

  • Support curriculum design and team training as possible and needed.

  • Support setup, cleanup, and materials management; engage kids in games, exploration, and activities

  • Model the Wonder Way: we care, we share, we listen, we play, we repair

Example Projects:

  • Launching a spring enrollment campaign for afterschool across email, Instagram, and WhatsApp with coordinated timing

  • Creating Mailchimp audience segments to identify customers with re-enrollment potential

  • Writing the monthly newsletter of September, in coordination with our blogger and program director

  • Representing School of Wonder at a Park Slope community fair

Schedule & Location: Part-time permanent employee, 3 days/week (Tuesday–Thursday), 24 hrs/week.

  • ~30% in the office (603 Bergen St., Brooklyn) · ~35% remote · ~30% Prospect Park · ~5% community events

  • July–August: role may require 4–5 days/week to support summer camps; additional days are credited as time off in the slower winter season (December–March)

  • During afterschool season: at least 2 program sessions per week in the park

  • During winter (December–March): 1–2 program sessions per week

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience working with children ages 5–11 in educational or youth settings

  • Strong writing and copy-editing skills — clear, warm, and on-brand

  • Strong organizational skills: calendar management, deadlines, multiple projects in motion

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small, fast-moving team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in communications, community outreach, or a related field

  • Experience managing tools such as: Mailchimp, Canva, Notion, Excel, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Squarespace, and Gmail

  • Background in nature-based education, outdoor programs, or environmental advocacy

  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or French

  • Personal or professional connection to the arts, ecology, or early childhood education

  • Optimistic-realistic attitude, committed, curious, problem-solver, flexible, punctual, and reliable

  • Willing to bike — we move between Prospect Park and the office on two wheels

What We Offer:

  • A monthly salary based on $23/hour

  • Workers' compensation, disability benefits, family leave, and social security

  • Additional employee benefits as the organization grows

  • Staff trainings and team retreats

  • Company email and access to all tools

  • A role designed to grow as School of Wonder grows

How to Apply:

Send your resume and a short paragraph (5–8 sentences) introducing yourself and why this role speaks to you to hola@theschoolofwonder.com.

We especially welcome applications from people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, Spanish and French speakers, and those with backgrounds in community organizing, outdoor education, or the arts.
